On the Leibnizufer, Callboy Hannover will show you a Hanover landmark. Here, since 1974, stand Niki de Saint Phalle's Nanas. Initially controversial, sparking a wave of protest, they are now an integral part of Hanover's landscape. The artist, like the Nanas, was from France. Besides their vibrant colors, the defining characteristics of these sculptures are the voluminous and disproportionately rendered female genitalia. Why are they called Nanas? In French, "nana" refers to a modern, self-confident, and erotic woman. With the phrase "Everyone makes the Nanas," Niki de Saint Phalle anticipated the ideas of the women's movement in the mid-1960s.
